Cabin Wood, Cookstown, July 2025

Only a few years ago, when there was a Facebook post warning about the giant hogweeds strewn along the riverside, did I learn about a little-known gem at Cookstown’s southern tip. The only other forest/wood is Drum Manor Park, but it is around a 3.5-mile drive from town and is, by far, much larger.

Cabin Wood has almost everything in a compact package: wooded areas with riverside walks, sandbanks, open countryside walks with farming fields on either side, wildlife, and a wonderful view of Killymoon Castle & its surroundings.

Despite its compact size, there are plenty of footpaths to explore. It’s conveniently located just a short drive from the town centre.
